Why fix a rock chip now?

A small rock chip can look minor. But windshield glass is under constant stress — and chips spread.

  • Temperature swings crack glass. Central Oregon sees cold mornings and hot afternoons. That daily expansion and contraction works a chip into a crack fast.
  • Roads do the rest. Every bump, pothole, and rough stretch adds stress directly to the chip. A 20-minute highway run can turn a small nick into a 6-inch crack.
  • Once it cracks, repair isn't an option. A long crack usually means a full windshield replacement — a much bigger job. Fixing a chip early avoids that entirely.
  • Rock chip repair costs far less than replacement. The sooner you call, the more likely the chip is still small enough to fill on-site.

Will my chip spread?

Plain answers to common questions about rock chips and windshield repairs.

How do I know if my chip can be repaired?

Most chips smaller than a quarter — and chips that haven't yet spread into a crack — can be filled with resin. The best way to find out is to call us and describe what you're seeing.

What makes a chip turn into a crack?

Heat, cold, vibration, and moisture all stress the glass around the chip. A chip already weakens the glass structure, so any added pressure — a pothole, a car wash, a hot day — can push a crack outward from the impact point.

Can the windshield be repaired if it's already cracked?

Short cracks — generally under a few inches and not in the driver's direct line of sight — may still be repairable. Longer cracks typically require full replacement. The sooner you address it, the more options you have.

Does rain or cold weather matter before the repair?

Moisture and cold temperatures can affect how resin cures and bonds inside the chip. For best results, repairs are done in dry conditions. If your chip is exposed to rain before we arrive, it's still worth calling — we'll assess it on-site.

What happens if I use a DIY kit from a store?

Consumer kits use lower-grade resins and basic injection tools. They can sometimes seal the surface but often leave the chip visually prominent and structurally weak. Professional-grade equipment — like Glasweld tools — applies resin under controlled vacuum and pressure for a stronger bond.

How soon should I call after getting a chip?

As soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more dirt, water, and vibration work into the chip. A fresh chip is easier to fill cleanly. If you noticed it today, call today.

Central Oregon roads — especially the highways in and out of Bend — are hard on windshields. Loose gravel and heavy truck traffic make rock chips a regular reality here. We're set up specifically to handle that.
